Shillong: Meghalaya honored former Chief Minister Dr. DD Lapang on Sunday, marking the one-year anniversary of his death. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma took to social media to celebrate the veteran leader. He called Lapang the “Architect of Ri Bhoi district” and a guiding light for the state.
Supporters gathered at Ri Bhoi College in Nongpoh on Saturday. Attendees placed flowers at a bust installed by the Youngminds Association earlier this year. Speakers praised his refusal to engage in mudslinging. They highlighted his advice that politicians should defend their own policies instead of attacking opponents. Lapang maintained deep friendships across party lines.
Local officials filled the crowd. Cabinet Minister Sosthenes Sohtun and Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem attended. Nongpoh MDC Rona Khymdeit and KHADC member Mathew Kenneth Makdoh arrived to pay respects. Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Saini and Superintendent of Police Giri Prasad joined the tribute. The group included the late leader's son, BR Blah, alongside Ri Bhoi College Principal Dr. E Kharkongor, students, and local residents.
