Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma promised to hold elections for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council as soon as possible. He expects to finish the process before the current six-month term extension runs out. The state granted this extra time to wrap up the delimitation process and finalize a separate electoral roll. Officials needed the break to get the necessary administrative paperwork sorted.
The government must finish the delimitation before the voting starts. This task depends on the separate electoral roll receiving official approval from the Governor. Sangma noted that the committee needs that sign-off to move into the final stages of the project. He expects the remaining work to conclude within the new deadline.
Some critics claim the government is stalling for political gain. Sangma dismissed these concerns. He maintained that the extension exists only to fix logistical hurdles rather than to dodge the voters. He stated, "We are not trying to delay the elections for any other purpose." The government remains committed to moving the electoral process forward without further setbacks.
