Garo Hills Council Elections Delayed Pending Boundary Reforms

Shillong: Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister and District Council Affairs Minister Prestone Tynsong confirmed the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council elections remain on hold. Various regional groups protested the recent six-month extension of the council term. Tynsong explained the delay stems from ongoing work on constituency delimitation and electoral rolls.

Officials established a delimitation committee to redraw constituency boundaries. "Constituency-rangko nipilna gita chinga delimitation committee-ko songaha aro ia committee, da·o kamrangko matchotna siengaha," Tynsong stated. The council must approve this committee report before sending it to the Governor for final authorization.

Electoral roll complications also forced the delay. The state plans to print the final electoral roll on October 26 and will initiate a Special Intensive Revision specifically for the council. Returning officers will then compile a unique roll incorporating both tribal and non-tribal voters to reflect recent rule changes. With these administrative tasks pending, holding elections before April 17 is impossible.
