Shillong: Shillong district officials launched a cleanup mission on August 19. They targeted messy, overhanging wires dangling over city streets. The work followed direct orders from Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma. Crews descended on the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, the IGP area, and Raj Bhavan. They found a tangled web of poorly installed utility cables everywhere.

The administration wants cleaner streets. They also want to stop public safety hazards caused by the clutter. Officials stated the drive was aimed at "improving the appearance of Shillong while addressing potential safety concerns and inconvenience caused to the public by poorly managed utility infrastructure."

The city has put agencies and cable providers on notice. Operators must now maintain their lines and organize equipment properly. They must also pull down any dead or unused wires immediately. This is just the start. The district administration plans to roll out similar cleanup operations across other parts of the city to fix the ongoing utility mess.
