Shillong: State officials and local leaders cleared the Shillong Peak Ropeway project on Saturday after a site inspection and community talks. The government promises strict safety protocols and environmental protections for the area. Residents previously questioned the impact on water sources and tree cover. Tourism Department Commissioner R. M. Kurbah stated the project avoids key catchment areas and will not harm the Patakhana or Wahingdoh water supplies.
Construction workers already cut 545 trees for the stations and base works. They secured all necessary legal permits first. Engineers redesigned the project to raise cable car heights, which limits the total number of trees removed. Crews are now planting new trees to compensate for the loss. They will add more if the state finds extra land.
IIT Delhi experts vetted the technical design and safety plans. Ground stabilization remains a primary focus for the builders. KEC-TCL Project Head J. P. Singh promised to maintain high standards throughout the build. He said, "The company would give the highest priority to safety while executing the project."
The Riat Laban Dorbar Pyllun Shnong backs the work. President Iosterston Sun pledged the group will help finish the job on time. Local leaders expect a boost for tourism and new jobs once the line opens. This is the first major passenger ropeway in Meghalaya. Workers aim to beat the official 2028 completion deadline.
