West Jaintia Hills Orders Highway Stall Removal

Shillong: West Jaintia Hills authorities ordered an immediate clear-out of roadside stalls on National Highway 40E/206. The District Highway Safety Task Force issued the directive following concerns over public safety and traffic flow. The move affects a stretch between kilometer 216,060 and 216,540.

These shops sit on the Right of Way, effectively blocking highway maintenance crews and creating hazards. The administration cited a Supreme Court order from April 13, 2026, which forbids permanent or temporary commercial structures on federal road reserves. "The administration has appealed for public cooperation to ensure smooth traffic flow and safety," officials stated.

Vendors have exactly 48 hours to move their equipment to authorized spots. Ignore this and the task force will tear the stalls down. The owners will shoulder the cost of the cleanup if the government has to intervene.
