Shillong: Martin Luther Christian University landed a research grant from the National Innovation Foundation-India. The school plans to document, protect, and boost centuries-old traditional knowledge in the West Jaintia Hills district. Most of these indigenous practices currently lack any written record.
The project targets grassroots innovations. Researchers will survey local methods covering food, crafts, agriculture, biodiversity, and veterinary care. They also intend to spot local problems to build solutions. This work aims to preserve the cultural practices of Jaintia tribal communities for a national audience. The university hopes to document, preserve, and promote these unique systems.
Dr. Larilin Kharpuri leads the study as principal investigator. She works alongside co-investigators Dr. PC Laldingliani, Dr. Pranjal Dubey, and Mewanshanbor Lyngdoh. The entire team hails from the Department of Environment and Traditional Ecosystems at MLCU.
