Guwahati: Researchers from Mizoram University found a new gecko species living in the rocky terrain of Umrangso. This find adds to the biodiversity of the Dima Hasao district in Assam. The team named the lizard Cyrtodactylus diamensis. It joins the existing Cyrtodactylus genus.

The Journal of Threatened Taxa published these findings. Krijotiya Thaochen, Mathipi Vabeirureilai, Mara Duaa Hlychho, and Hmar Flawte conducted the study. They gathered specimens during fieldwork in August 2025 and July 2026. The team spent seven nights tracking the animals to study their physical features, genetics, and microhabitats.

This species sits close to Cyrtodactylus arunachalensis. However, the study confirms clear differences in genetic makeup and physical traits. The authors state, "The discovery highlights the ecological importance of the rocky landscapes of Dima Hasao and underscores the need for further biodiversity research and habitat conservation in Assam and the Northeast." Experts claim these findings prove that Assam remains a vital area for future scientific exploration.
