Shillong: Williamnagar MLA Marcuise N. Marak inspected the Sloping Agricultural Land Technology (SALT) project in Nengmandalgre on Tuesday. The Meghalaya Soil and Water Conservation Department manages the initiative to assist local farmers. It aims to revitalize land and prevent soil erosion.
Farmers now grow rice, vegetables, and fruit-bearing trees on terraced plots. The project promotes sustainable agriculture while helping residents diversify their income. Locals can also raise livestock to earn money. The department expects the program to stop the practice of slash and burn farming in the region.
Officials stated the project helps to conserve rainwater and restore degraded land for continuous use. A department official said, "Ia project-ko a·bachengate a·dokni bako gipin gipin biaprango bilsi rikkit buringrangko a·ba cha·e porongrong ong·ataoniko champengna mangsonge jakkalgimin a·arangko jakkaltaitaie gamna-ge·na aroba mikka waani chirangko tange rakkina ja·ku de·anian ong·a."
