Guwahati: Congress MPs hit back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 29. They questioned his focus on recent Legislative Council election results rather than alleged voting irregularities. Gaurav Gogoi blasted the Prime Minister for ignoring the situation. He accused the ruling party of stealing democracy.

Gogoi told reporters, "Why is the PM not speaking on the stealing of democracy? We have heard what the Union Home Minister had to say. Why can't the PM speak on this most important observation? Instead, he is speaking on MLC elections."

Manish Tewari joined the fray from Chandigarh. He slammed Modi for comparing different types of elections. He argued that the electoral colleges for these contests remain entirely distinct. The comparison feels beneath the office of the Prime Minister. Tewari also targeted BJP president Nitin Nabin over a planned padyatra. He claimed the march fails to address the disenfranchisement of 13 crore people. He called the event a distraction from government failures.

Rajya Sabha MP Akhilesh Prasad Singh demanded an end to MLC polls for teachers and graduates. He alleged that money dictates the outcome of these races. He pushed for reform. Singh clarified that Congress calls for paper ballots only apply to direct elections. He noted that MLC polls use a complex preferential voting system. This requires counting single votes across multiple rounds.

Modi recently praised the NDA victory on social media. He claimed the results show strong public trust in the coalition. Congress leaders reject that narrative entirely.
