Guwahati: Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi blasted the BJP-led government for its failed response to the Manipur crisis. Ethnic violence has plagued the state for over three years. The conflict, which ignited in May 2023, has killed more than 300 people and displaced thousands. People are still suffering.
Gogoi highlighted fresh tensions between Kuki-Zo, Naga, and Meitei communities. Reports of Kuki-Naga violence have surfaced since February. He questioned the delayed resignation of former Chief Minister N Biren Singh and the imposition of President’s Rule in February 2025. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit also failed to stop the unrest.
The Congress leader pointed to the Supreme Court-appointed committee led by former Jammu and Kashmir High Court Chief Justice Gita Mittal. The committee previously flagged concerns about poor humanitarian conditions and the struggle to rehabilitate displaced residents. Supreme Court judges remain involved, scrutinizing FIRs, relief camp deaths, and ongoing investigations.
Questions remain about the Peace Committee announced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in June 2023. Gogoi also pressed for updates on the Judicial Commission of Inquiry report and requested an all-party meeting. "Three years on, the people of Manipur deserve answers, not silence and delays," Gogoi stated. He demands civilian safety, fair investigations, and real efforts to bring peace to the region.
