Elderly man brutally beaten near Chibinang Bridge

Shillong: Two unidentified assailants ambushed a 60-year-old man near the Chibinang Bridge in West Garo Hills on Tuesday night. The victim, identified as Ayub, was walking home from a pasture near Chandigre around 8 pm when the group attacked him with sticks. The assault was unprovoked. Ayub suffered a fractured hand, a deep head wound, and other severe injuries.

He crawled to safety after the attackers fled the scene. Locals helped him reach the Phulbari Community Health Centre. Doctors later transferred him to a hospital in Goalpara, Assam, because his condition was so dire. He is currently recovering there.

West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Abraham T. Sangma confirmed the assault on Wednesday. "The victim’s family is in the process of filing a formal FIR, after which a full investigation will be launched," Sangma said. Police are tracking specific leads and expect to make arrests soon.
