Shillong: The Garo National Council tapped senior leader Henyshing A Sangma as acting president. The party finalized this choice during a Central Executive Committee meeting at their Tura office on October 23. This appointment follows the death of Kalpana D Sangma earlier in October. The vacancy left a hole in the party leadership.
GNC general secretary Augustine R Marak confirmed the move in an official statement. He noted the CEC holds authority to name an acting head, though only a formal General Conference can select a full-time president. Henyshing Sangma brings years of experience to the role. He previously worked as a government school teacher before leaving to focus on politics. He served as general secretary under the late Clifford R Marak and held the vice president seat during Kalpana D Sangma’s time in power.
The party pushed to fix its internal structure during the same meeting. They brought in Dolrich D Sangma, son of Clifford R Marak, as vice president. Sengjring Ch. Sangma, who is Clifford’s son-in-law, will take over as joint secretary. The GNC also appointed the late Kalpana D Sangma’s sister, a retired principal from Hawakhana Higher Secondary School, as an advisor. "Several young intellectuals were also inducted during the meeting to work toward the progress of the party and the Garo Hills region," the party stated.
