AHAM Demands Deadline for Tura Winter Capital Status

Shillong: The A’chik Holistic Awakening Movement, or AHAM, wants answers. They are pressuring the Meghalaya government to stop dragging its feet on naming Tura the state winter capital. This long-standing demand remains stuck in bureaucratic limbo. The group is tired of waiting.

This push stems from a March 6, 2025, session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. Former Chief Minister Dr. Mukul M. Sangma moved a resolution to designate Tura as the winter capital. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma blocked the vote by promising an all-party committee to study the move. The government officially formed that committee on April 2, 2025.

AHAM now wants to know if the panel finished its work. They are calling for the immediate release of the committee findings to the public. The organization insists the government set a clear date for a final cabinet decision. "The demand extends beyond holding occasional cabinet meetings or Assembly sessions in Tura," the group stated. If the review is still unfinished, the administration must explain the hold-up and fix a firm deadline.
