Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma ordered officials to finish building and expanding Meghalaya Houses across India. During a virtual meeting Tuesday, he reviewed projects in Delhi, Noida, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Vellore, and Kolkata. He wants these sites to function as a “home away from home” for residents seeking medical care, education, or government services. He demanded strict adherence to construction timelines without cutting corners on quality.
In other state developments, the BJP has shortlisted nine candidates for the upcoming Shillong Parliamentary by-election. The seat opened following the death of MP Dr. Ricky AJ Syngkon. Party MLA AL Hek confirmed the names are now in New Delhi for a final decision. Local political campaigns are already heating up across the state.
Meanwhile, the government is drafting the Shillong Drinking Water and Sewerage Board Act. PHE Minister Marcuise Marak says the state wants to centralize water distribution currently split between the Shillong Municipal Board and the Shillong Cantonment Board. Officials are now consulting with stakeholders like the Rangbah Shnongs to resolve jurisdictional gridlock.
In the Garo Hills, the new Tura cenotaph is nearly finished. Minister Marcuise Marak reported the project is 90 percent complete after labor shortages delayed work earlier this year. The committee behind the project also proposed a new war memorial for Tura to honor local veterans. This follows the controversial 2023 demolition of the century-old memorial built for the Garo Labour Corps.
Finally, Shillong will host a screening of the documentary Bhupen Da Uncut this Friday. The film honors Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika on his 100th birth anniversary. It screens at 4 PM at the St. Edmund’s College Auditorium. Principal Secretary Frederick Roy Kharkongor will inaugurate the event. Director Bobbeeta Sharma will participate in a post-screening session moderated by Sanjoy Hazarika.
