Garo Hills Senior Citizens Demand Permanent Sports Officers

Shillong: The Tura Garo Senior Citizens Forum is pushing the state government to appoint permanent district sports officers in every Garo Hills district. Most regions currently rely on in-charge officials, causing significant delays and operational headaches for sporting events. The forum submitted a formal request to the Commissioner and Secretary of the Sports and Youth Affairs Department to fix these vacancies.

The current staffing situation hampers the efficiency of the department and complicates the enforcement of sports regulations. Leaders of the forum noted that officials in various districts face a pending transfer cycle in 2025. “Garo Hills-ni pilak a·jarangon permanent District Sports Officer-rangko songe on·genchimode ian kamrangko ka·anio nambatatna man·gen aro Department-ni miksongani baksana niamrangkoba nambate chu·sokatna man·gen,” the group stated.

With Meghalaya set to host the National Games in 2027, the stakes are high. Tura serves as the headquarters for the Garo Hills region. Because of this, the forum explicitly demanded the appointment of a senior, experienced official to fill the District Sports Officer role in Tura immediately.
