Shillong: Nine hundred students from 42 schools hit the court and track Monday in Tura. The 2nd District-Level Inter-School Games kicked off at the Hawakhana Indoor Hall. Students from Selsella, Gambegre, and Tura are squaring off in volleyball, basketball, taekwondo, swimming, kabaddi, badminton, athletics, and table tennis. The District Sports Office of West Garo Hills organized the event for the Under-14, Under-15, and Under-17 age brackets.
Deputy Commissioner Vibhor Aggarwal and Meghalaya State Olympic Association Working President John F. Kharshiing attended the opener. Aggarwal told the crowd the games help students gauge their talent. He reminded athletes that Meghalaya will host the National Games soon. He urged them to look toward national and international goals. The final matches wrap up on September 3.
Kharshiing pointed to the Meghalaya Sports Policy 2019 as a turning point for local athletes. The policy offers scholarships and cash awards for winners. He noted the state revived the Meghalaya Games in 2020 to build momentum. "The policy has created a structured pathway for athletes to progress from school-level competitions to state-level events," Kharshiing said. He also touted the High Performance Programme as a key tool for growth.
Saljagring M. Marak, Assistant Director of the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, said the goal is simple. He wants to bring students from different schools onto one platform. The games build confidence. They highlight the best local talent.
