Shillong: The Meghalaya High Court ordered the immediate reopening of a liquor shop in Danakgre, West Garo Hills. Local church elders and organizations failed to stop the business. The owner previously moved the outlet from Jengjal Market. He held all required approvals for the site.
The court reviewed official records. It confirmed the shop followed all Meghalaya Excise Rules. No legal basis existed to block the operation. The ruling clarified the boundaries of local authority. The court noted: "A licence granted under the law cannot be taken away without due process."
Authorities tried to shut the business down. They cited moral concerns as the primary driver. The judge rejected this argument. Law must prevail over moral objections. The state must now allow the shop to resume daily business.
