Shillong: NEIGRIHMS finished a seven-day certificate training course on November 1. The program ran from October 26 and focused on breastfeeding and infant feeding counseling. Twenty-eight doctors and nurses joined the sessions to bolster maternal and child healthcare services across the region.
The Continuing Nursing Education Cell, the Department of Paediatrics, and the Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India organized the event. Instructors taught staff how to manage lactation, positioning, and milk expression. They also covered feeding low-birth-weight infants, complementary nutrition, and growth monitoring. The curriculum included specific protocols for maternal nutrition and feeding during illness, HIV cases, or for working mothers.
National trainers Dr. Manjubala Dash and Dr. Jayestri Kurushev traveled from Puducherry to lead the instruction. Dr. Kh. Ratankumar Singh and Dr. Shyamkumar Laishram from Imphal joined them to facilitate the workshops. This group provided the expertise needed to qualify the 28 participants as skilled counselors.
NEIGRIHMS Director Prof. Nalin Mehta addressed the group at the valedictory ceremony. He said, "The vital role nurses play in supporting mothers, noting that they are at the forefront of maternal and newborn care and are key to sustaining good feeding practices." Medical Superintendent Dr. Stephen Sailo also emphasized the need for healthcare workers to keep learning and sharing knowledge to upgrade patient care.
