Kohima: The District Health Society marked the start of World Breastfeeding Week at District Hospital Dimapur on August 1. This awareness campaign runs through August 7. Dr. Obed Sema, a paediatrician at the facility, led the session for local mothers and caregivers. He delivered a clear message to the room. "Exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months is essential for a child’s healthy growth and survival."
Dr. Sema emphasized that mothers must start nursing within one hour of delivery. This allows the baby to consume colostrum. It serves as the child's first vaccine. Breastmilk offers complete nutrition while fueling brain development. It builds immunity to fight off diarrhea, respiratory illnesses, and various infections. The practice also tightens the physical and emotional bond between mother and child.
Nursing provides long-term health perks for the mother as well. It promotes faster uterine recovery after birth. It cuts the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. It also assists in natural birth spacing. Dr. Sema noted that the process is cost-effective and saves precious time for growing families. He pushed for continued breastfeeding alongside solid foods until a child reaches two years of age or older.
The doctor called on families, workplaces, and the wider community to build support systems for nursing mothers. Health facilities under the CMO Dimapur plan to hold similar talks across their jurisdictions this week. These efforts aim to cement breastfeeding as a primary pillar of maternal and child health services throughout the district.
