Mon Health Workers Combat Infant Feeding Myths

Kohima: The District Health Society in Mon held World Breastfeeding Week from August 1 to 7, 2026. The campaign theme was, "Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works." Health workers and ASHAs pushed for exclusive breastfeeding across all district blocks.

Misconceptions run deep in remote villages. Many families feed infants water, soup, or semi-solid foods before the six-month mark. Some working mothers start early complementary feeding as soon as the third month to get back to agricultural labor. ASHAs hit the streets to fix this. They went door-to-door to talk with mothers, fathers, and grandparents about healthy habits.

The team urged families to start breastfeeding within one hour of birth. They pushed for six months of exclusive nursing and continuing for two years or longer. Elders were a primary target. These older family members often make the final calls on infant care.

A focused group discussion took place August 4 at the District Hospital in Mon. Dr. Wungyong Konyak and pediatrician Dr. Chimang Paul led the session for new mothers and their attendants. They covered nutrition, proper techniques, and long-term health perks for both mother and baby. The Department of Social Welfare team, representing Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, handed out nutritional gift packages to mothers. Officials promise that community-based education will keep going to ensure better health outcomes for local children.
