Kohima: The District Health Society in Mon wrapped up a week-long campaign on August 7 aimed at boosting exclusive breastfeeding rates. Running from August 1 to 7, the initiative focused on the theme: "Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works." Health teams targeted rural villages where many families still feed infants water, soup, or semi-solid foods before the recommended six-month mark.
Economic pressure forces some mothers back to agricultural labor as early as the third month. This leads to early weaning. ASHAs walked door-to-door to educate parents and grandparents about starting breast milk within one hour of birth and keeping it up for at least two years. Getting elders on board remains a priority since they often dictate home childcare routines.
Experts gathered at District Hospital on August 4 for a dedicated session. Dr. Wungyong Konyak and Dr. Chimang Paul counseled mothers and family members on nutrition and latch techniques. The Department of Social Welfare’s Beti Bachao Beti Padhao team joined the event to hand out nutritional gift packages. Officials plan to keep the counseling going to ensure the lessons stick.
