Phek Hospital Hosts Breastfeeding Awareness Drive

Kohima: District Hospital Phek hosted a health awareness event this week to mark World Breastfeeding Week. The campaign runs from August 1 to 7 under the theme, "Breastfeeding is a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works."

Paediatrician Dr. Keduoneilhou Mere addressed a group of expectant and lactating mothers. He explained that breast milk supplies all necessary nutrition for the first six months of life. It also provides antibodies to shield infants from various infections. Beyond physical health, the doctor noted that the practice builds a strong emotional bond between parent and child.

The health benefits for mothers are significant. Dr. Mere stated that breastfeeding assists the uterus in returning to its pre-birth size and aids in post-pregnancy weight loss. Staff members also held a practical demonstration for attendees to learn the correct physical techniques for nursing.

Health workers across Phek are pushing this message throughout the week. Community Health Officers, Auxiliary Nurse Midwives, and Accredited Social Health Activists are currently visiting homes to counsel new parents. These teams advise families to skip infant formula, feeding bottles, and pacifiers in favor of exclusive breastfeeding.
