Imphal: Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences staff launched World Breastfeeding Week today. The program runs for seven days. Organizers include the Trained Nurses Association of India Manipur State Branch and the hospital Department of Paediatrics.
The event occupies the Paediatric Outpatient Department. Medical Superintendent Dr. Th. Lokeshwar opened the proceedings. He demanded newborns get breast milk immediately after birth to fight infections and spur growth. He told attendees, "Breastfeeding provides lifelong health benefits not only to infants but also to mothers."
Lokeshwar claims the practice shields mothers from various illnesses, including breast cancer. Breast milk carries vital hormones and antibodies to build a baby's immune system. It also deepens the emotional tie between mother and child. He urged parents to breastfeed exclusively during the recommended window to guarantee a healthy life start.
This year the campaign runs under the theme Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works. Staff also set up a photo exhibition at the Paediatric OPD to showcase these benefits to the public.
