Aizawl: Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh top the charts for cancer incidence in Northeast India. The Indian Council of Medical Research released the figures this week. Manipur sits well below both the regional and national averages. Data shows Mizoram leads the pack for men with 269 cases per 100,000. Arunachal Pradesh hits the highest mark for women at 219 cases per 100,000.

Manipur reports 71.1 cases per 100,000 women and 62.8 per 100,000 men. National averages sit at 105 and 95 respectively. Dhabali Thangjam, Chairman of the BABINA Group of Companies, shared these numbers at a breast cancer awareness event held Friday at the Manipur Press Club. The American Oncology Institute, Babina Specialty Hospital, and the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union organized the session.

Thangjam noted that one in nine Indians faces a lifetime cancer risk. Lung cancer plagues men most often. Breast cancer hits women hardest. He attributed the drop in cervical cancer to improved hygiene and lifestyle shifts. He urged the public to quit tobacco and smoking to slash risks.

Patients once trekked to Guwahati for care. Local facilities were scarce. Now, the American Oncology Institute at Babina Specialty Hospital fills that gap. Thangjam emphasized that early screening changes everything. He stated, "Early detection can make the disease highly treatable and curable." He warned people not to treat a diagnosis like a death sentence.
