Aizawl: Mizoram is upgrading its diagnostic equipment and training healthcare workers to catch cancer earlier. Health Minister Lalrinpuii announced the move Tuesday after attending Scientific Fest 2026 at Zoram Medical College and Hospital. The Monday event, focused on breast cancer, was hosted by the Scientific Forum. The state is dealing with high rates of stomach, oesophagus, lung, and breast cancers.
"Mizoram has a high incidence of cancers of the stomach, oesophagus, lungs and breast, making improved diagnostic facilities and greater public awareness important in tackling the disease," Lalrinpuii stated. The government also tightened its referral system to speed up patient access to treatment. Officials want people in the system faster.
Patients might need surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy depending on the cancer stage. Palliative care and psychosocial support are also required for a better quality of life. Lalrinpuii warned the public against self-treatment. See a doctor if you notice unusual body changes. Early diagnosis stops the disease from advancing.
Prevention is key. Avoid tobacco and alcohol. Eat well and stay active. The Health Department cannot do this alone. Families, communities, schools, colleges, and churches must help. Students need more awareness. Collective effort is the only way forward.
