Aizawl: The Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee is demanding more openness from the Zoram People's Movement government regarding the Universal Health Care Scheme. Party spokesperson Dr. Lallianchhunga spoke in Aizawl on October 19. He wants the state to lower registration fees to help the poor.
Taxpayers pay for this. Public cash fuels the system. The party pointed to deductions from state workers and retirees as proof that the program belongs to the people. Lallianchhunga warned, "Healthcare is being funded with public money and every eligible person should be able to access the scheme."
Nine private hospitals in Mizoram remain outside the current network. The Non-Government Hospital Association of Mizoram claims these facilities are ready to join if the government matches the rates set for the church-run Synod Hospital. While the state recently offered to match those rates for comparable facilities, the association says many hospitals are still waiting for a government response after submitting paperwork.
Lallianchhunga questioned why officials secured deals with hospitals outside the state while ignoring local providers. The scheme currently covers over 3.2 lakh families. Launched in March 2025, it offers general users up to Rs 5 lakh in coverage. Government staff pay monthly premiums between Rs 200 and Rs 1,500 for unlimited care. Meanwhile, pensioners surrender a monthly allowance of Rs 1,000 to access up to Rs 24 lakh per financial year. Phase two of the initiative began in March 2026.
