Mizoram Congress Slams ZPM Over Stagnant State Economy

Aizawl: Mizoram Congress leaders blasted the ZPM government on September 11. They claim the state budget has ballooned without helping ordinary people. State Congress vice-president Lalnunmawia Chuaungo addressed a political session in Aizawl. He noted the budget jumped from Rs 8,803.10 crore in 2017-18 to Rs 17,469.91 crore for 2026-27. Money is tight. Chuaungo noted, "Despite this, shopkeepers in Aizawl are finding it difficult to sell their goods as there is very little money circulating in the market."

He blamed the government for poor planning. Cash is not moving through the local economy. Chuaungo attacked the frequent use of restricted tenders for public projects. Chief Minister Lalduhoma once promised these would be rare. The rules changed. The Public Works Department now manages 1,649 registered contractors. Officials handed out 207 contracts via restricted tenders. They finished 689 other jobs departmentally. A small group holds all the power.

The opposition also hit the Mizoram Universal Health Care Scheme. Defects in the program force citizens to spend their cash outside state borders. This drains the local economy further. The ZPM government has no real plan for local goods or job growth. Congress leaders promised to overhaul these policies if they win back power. No government officials or ZPM leaders provided a comment on the claims.
