Aizawl: Mizoram Congress officials plan a statewide Black Day on July 21. They are targeting the proposed Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026. Protests start at noon. The Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee treasurer, Dr. Lalmalsawma Nghaka, announced the action at an Aizawl press conference on Thursday. He invited churches, Christian groups, and the public to join.
Congress leaders claim the BJP-led Centre wants to squeeze funding for Christian institutions. They argue this bill will hurt social, educational, and charity work across the state. Nghaka noted the history of the law. It began in 1976, saw changes in 1984, a 2010 revision, and BJP-led tightening in 2020. The party claims over 20,000 organizations lost their FCRA licenses since the BJP took power, with several in Mizoram affected. "The proposed amendment will severely impact churches, NGOs and Christian organisations that rely on foreign contributions for their social, educational and charitable activities," Nghaka said. The party vows to fight until the government withdraws the bill.
Political shifts continue elsewhere in the state. The Chakma Autonomous District Council recently elected a new leader. Zoram People's Movement member Kali Kumar Tongchangya secured the chairman seat unopposed on July 16. The Fultuli constituency representative replaced the resigned Lakkhan Chakma after a special session. Deputy Chairman Sundor Muni Chakma declared the win. The council emerged from one year of Governor's Rule on July 7, 2026. A new alliance changed the local government. The ZPM and BJP formed the Chakma Democratic Alliance Legislature Party. Chief Executive Member Nirupam Chakma now leads the executive body. The alliance controls 19 seats in the 20-member council. The Mizo National Front holds the remaining seat.
