Guwahati: Assam has officially secured the Letter of Permission from the National Medical Commission to open Bongaigaon Medical College. The green light arrived on August 31, 2026. This facility marks the 15th medical institution in the state. Officials cleared the project for an annual intake of 100 MBBS students starting in the 2026 academic year.
The Medical Assessment and Rating Board issued the permit after a successful appeal. The application was filed under number NMC/UGN/2026-2027/0013. This decision overturned an earlier Letter of Disapproval dated August 17, 2026. The Second Appeal Committee reviewed the case before granting the final go-ahead.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the news with the public. He views the project as a move to expand healthcare access across western Assam. Sarma congratulated his team on the result and described the addition as another major step towards building a "Swasthya Assam."
