Nursing Shortage Leaves Patients Stranded at Assam Hospital

Guwahati: Patients seeking care at Abhayapuri State Hospital in Assam’s Bongaigaon district found empty halls on the night of October 3. No nurses were available to administer injections. This forced sick people to leave without help.

The facility employs five nurses, but the roster is failing. One staffer has been on leave since October 1. Another nurse, Supriya Adhikari, was assigned the night shift but walked off the job at 10 p.m. She cited safety concerns about working the shift alone. The doctor on duty confirmed this marks the third consecutive night of staffing gaps.

The doctor said, "The shortage could affect the hospital's ability to provide emergency services."

This failure occurs just two days before Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurates the new Bongaigaon Medical College on October 5. Local residents are now demanding answers regarding the hospital's basic operations. Long-standing allegations of irregular attendance among the nursing staff have resurfaced as the region prepares to scale up its healthcare infrastructure.
