Guwahati: Assam earned the second spot in India for access to essential medicines within public health facilities. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the ranking on October 6. He credited the win to a robust state healthcare system. Health Minister Ashok Singhal first flagged the achievement based on the National Essential Drugs List.
The state provides life-saving drugs for free through the National Health Mission. This program cuts costs for families. Sarma praised the outcome. "A proud moment for Assam's healthcare journey," he said.
The Assam Medical Services Corporation Limited manages all drug buys. It centralizes the process to boost efficiency and quality. The 2026 National Health Mission compendium recently named this model a best practice for supply chains. It aligns with the Union Health Ministry's Free Drugs Service Initiative. Sarma told his team to keep pushing hard.
