Assam Rolls Out Three-Tier Cancer Treatment Network

Guwahati: Assam is building a massive three-tier medical grid to fight cancer. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the plan on Saturday to bring affordable care to local doorsteps. The state government teamed up with Tata Trusts to roll out this infrastructure across multiple locations. They want to stop patients from traveling long distances to major cities outside the Northeast for help.

The system handles everything. It covers screening, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care. The Kokrajhar Cancer Care Centre serves as a primary example of this shift. It targets patients in western Assam and nearby zones to cut down on travel. Sarma said the project offers more than just medicine. He wrote on X: "The 3-tier cancer care grid which is being laid across Assam is helping patients receive the best care at the most affordable prices with a caring approach for patients and attendants."

The state faces a heavy cancer burden. This decentralization aims to fix that. Officials are shifting focus toward prevention and early awareness to boost survival rates. By integrating these services, the government hopes to balance healthcare access between rural and urban populations.
