Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma plans to challenge the federal government over the proposed Foreign Contribution Regulation (Amendment) Bill, 2026. He identified specific provisions in the draft legislation as unacceptable for the state. Lalduhoma will meet with the Council of Churches in Mizoram and the Mizoram Kohhran Hruaitute Committee this Saturday. These discussions will shape the state's official response to the Union Government.
This move follows a formal demand from the Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee. The party urged Lalduhoma to call a special Assembly session to pass a resolution opposing the Bill. MPCC president Lal Thanzara signed the memorandum, which called the matter a priority for the state. They fear the Bill threatens local Christians and non-governmental organisations.
The Congress also wants the Chief Minister to lead a delegation of church and NGO leaders to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Former MLA John Siamkunga stated the party’s position clearly. He told reporters, "We have found certain provisions in the proposed FCRA amendment which are not acceptable to us." The party is pushing for the state's two Members of Parliament to vote against the Bill when it hits the floor. Currently, the Congress claims the state government has been too quiet despite ongoing prayer meetings held by local churches.
Lalduhoma announced his strategy while visiting Kawrthah North village in Mamit district on July 24. The village recently won the top prize in the Clean and Green Panchayat category of the 2025 Deen Dayal Upadhyay Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar. The government now aims to align its official stance with the needs of local religious and civil groups.
