Aizawl: The Council of Churches in Mizoram will hold a protest march in Aizawl on August 11. This rally targets the proposed Foreign Contribution Regulation Amendment Bill of 2026. The council announced the plans during a press conference at the Aizawl Press Club this Thursday.
Church leaders worry that certain provisions will cripple organizations that rely on foreign aid. CCM president Rev. R. Lalbiakliana noted that while parts of the bill show promise, the text contains serious flaws. He said, “The proposed amendments contain some positive provisions but also includes significant shortcomings.”
The council represents nine major denominations: the Mizoram Presbyterian Church, Baptist Church of Mizoram, Evangelical Church of Mizoram, Lairam Isua Krista Baptist Church, Evangelical Free Church of India, Isua Krista Church, Independent Church of India, Wesleyan Methodist Church of Mizoram, and the Zomi Baptist Church. Organizers plan to invite all local churches and voluntary groups to join the march.
Government officials claim the bill will boost transparency and protect national interests. Still, faith-based groups remain skeptical. Opposition is growing fast. The Baptist Church of Mizoram held special prayer services for the cause on July 26. This march serves as the first major public action against the legislation, which parliament may review during the current Monsoon Session.
