Aizawl: The Council of Churches in Mizoram (CCM) is taking to the streets. The umbrella group will hold a massive protest in Aizawl on August 11 to slam the proposed Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026. The march starts at 10:30 am from Zarkawt and Sikulpuikawn. Protesters will meet outside Vanapa Hall.
CCM president Rev. Dr. R. Lalbiakliana announced the action during a press conference at the Aizawl Press Club. He warned that the state government is not doing enough to block the bill. He fears the law will wreck churches and NGOs. "The CCM will continue its opposition until the proposed Bill is withdrawn," Lalbiakliana said.
The council represents nine major groups: the Mizoram Presbyterian Church, Baptist Church of Mizoram, Evangelical Church of Mizoram, Lairam Isua Krista Baptist Church, Evangelical Free Church of India, Isua Krista Church, Independent Church of India, Wesleyan Methodist Church of Mizoram, and Zomi Baptist Church. They have invited all denominations and civic groups to join them.
The CCM claims 19 groups in Mizoram hold FCRA licences. Only the Presbyterian Church of India and the Baptist Church of Mizoram are currently registered under the Act. Nationally, Christian groups make up 12 percent of licence holders but haul in 55 to 60 percent of the total foreign funding.
Lalbiakliana specifically flagged fears that authorities could seize, liquidate, or sell assets without a warrant. While the government says the bill boosts transparency, the church fears administrative overreach. They worry the new rules for property confiscation bypass judicial oversight entirely. Tension is high. The Baptist Church of Mizoram held special prayers regarding the issue on July 26.
