Aizawl: Mizoram State University will open its doors by 2028. Higher and Technical Education Minister Vanlalthlana confirmed the timeline on October 28 as the government scrambles to finalize a site in Lunglei. The state Assembly originally passed the bill for the institution in March 2025 with plans to base it in Aizawl. Officials later pivoted to Lunglei to better manage administrative needs.
Recruitment for the school is active. The government has greenlit 21 of the 71 total posts created for the campus. Search committees are currently vetting candidates for vice-chancellor and registrar positions. A previous nominee dropped out, forcing the state to reconstitute the panel. The minister said, "The government has created 71 posts for the university and received approval to fill 21 of them so far."
Technical education is also getting a massive upgrade. The Mizoram Engineering College at Pukpui landed approval from the All India Council for Technical Education to launch Civil and Computer Science programs. Each course will take 30 students annually. Construction cost the state roughly Rs 26 crore, and classes start for the 2027-28 session.
State infrastructure spending continues elsewhere. The government secured forest clearance funds for the NIT Lengpui campus and joined the MERITE project. This deal brings Rs 6 crore to Women's Polytechnic Aizawl and Rs 18 crore to NIT Mizoram. Meanwhile, the department promoted 136 teachers since 2024. Pay for casual assistant professors jumped to Rs 35,000 in 2025. Officials met on October 23 to discuss regularizing 22 contract professors. Finally, 15 local students are prepping for civil service exams through a free partnership with the Chennai-based Shankar IAS Academy.
