Mizoram Powers Up With New Solar and Hydropower Infrastructure

Aizawl: Mizoram is ramping up its clean energy output. The state pushed out 41.86 million units of solar power and 31.04 million units from Small Hydel Projects in 2024-25. Officials are betting big on a mix of solar farms and heavy-duty water power to keep the lights on.

Solar projects are hitting the ground across the state. They have finished 20 MWp in Vankal, 2 MWp in Tlungvel, and 10 MWp in Thenzawl. Crews are still building a 5 MWp plant in Sumsuih. People are also jumping on the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. As of August 14, 1,417 households finished rooftop solar setups out of 1,532 total applications. The government is now checking other state buildings to fit them with panels.

Hydropower is getting a massive injection of cash. The 24-MW Tuirini Small Hydel Project in Aizawl district just cleared its first major hurdle. Crews finished a 9-km approach road and laid the foundation stone. Officials noted, "The project has received administrative approval of Rs 676.98 crore." A New Development Bank loan should cover Rs 541.58 crore, with the state chipping in Rs 135.40 crore. Forest clearance and land acquisition are still on the table.

The massive 132-MW Tuivai Hydroelectric Project in Saitual district is also moving forward. Planners finished the revised Detailed Project Report under the Infrastructure Investment Fund for Development Projects scheme. They want to turn it into an Externally Aided Project soon. Meanwhile, the Power and Electricity Department plans to split into three Strategic Business Units. The Administrative Reforms Wing is currently reviewing the shift.
