Aizawl: The Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee plans a statewide Black Day protest on July 21. They want to stop the proposed Foreign Contribution Regulation Amendment Bill of 2026. Demonstrations begin at noon across the state. Party treasurer Dr. Lalmalsawma Nghaka says they will fight until the government drops the bill. The party claims the BJP-led Centre targets Christian groups.
Congress leaders cite past data to justify their anger. They allege over 20,000 organization licenses fell under the axe since the BJP took power. Nghaka traced the law's history back to 1976. He noted revisions in 1984, 2010, and 2020. He remains firm on the consequences. "The proposed amendment will severely impact churches, NGOs and Christian organisations that rely on foreign contributions for their social, educational and charitable activities," Nghaka said.
Meanwhile, the Chakma Autonomous District Council has a new leader. Zoram People's Movement member Kali Kumar Tongchangya took the chairman's seat on July 16. He ran unopposed. Deputy Chairman Sundor Muni Chakma confirmed the result after the special session. The Fultuli representative replaces former chairman Lakkhan Chakma.
The council recently emerged from a year of Governor's Rule. That period ended on July 7, 2026. A new alliance changed the power dynamic. The ZPM and BJP formed the Chakma Democratic Alliance Legislature Party on June 23. Chief Executive Member Nirupam Chakma now leads the executive body. The alliance controls 19 of the 20 total seats. The Mizo National Front holds the final seat.
