Mizoram Congress Rallies Against Proposed FCRA Amendment Bill

Aizawl: Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee members filled the streets in Aizawl on July 21. They gathered outside Vanapa Hall to kill the Centre's proposed Foreign Contribution Regulation Amendment Bill. The party claims the law will strangle churches, NGOs, and hospitals that depend on overseas cash.

Lalnunmawia Chuaungo, the party's senior vice-president, took the podium to blast the proposal. He argued the rules make it nearly impossible for groups to keep their funding certifications or fight back if the government rejects their bids. Chuaungo warned that this hits the state's poorest residents the hardest. These vulnerable people rely on foreign-funded welfare programs and schools.

Chella Kumar, the Congress in-charge for Mizoram, accused federal leaders of picking a fight with minorities. He claimed the bill intentionally targets charitable work. "The Congress would continue to oppose the proposed legislation," Kumar stated during the rally.

Protesters passed six formal resolutions at the site. They want the Centre to scrap the bill entirely. The party now expects Chief Minister Lalduhoma to rally church leaders and NGO heads to form a united front against the move. Congress leaders also demanded their two sitting Members of Parliament vote against the bill rather than staying on the sidelines. Finally, the party wants the state government to call a special Assembly session to pass a formal protest resolution. The Centre remains silent on the backlash.
