Aizawl: Mizoram's Hnahsin Kut, better known as the Cosmos Festival, wrapped up a massive run on October 16. The 11-day event pumped an estimated 15 crore into the local economy of Champhai and surrounding areas. Organizers counted 1.2 lakh visitors between October 6 and 16, with a final-night concert alone packing in 42,000 people. It was a busy stretch for the region.
The Champhai Nature Conservancy organized the festival with backing from the Mizoram government. Festival stalls pulled in 2 crore, while local lodging providers raked in 1.4 crore. The 15 crore total accounts for all spending on transport, food, and shopping across the district. While these figures remain unverified, they show a clear spike in regional trade.
Tourism Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar praised the initiative for boosting local talent and putting remote spots on the map. During the closing event, he stated, "Increasing domestic travel within the state was helping local businesses and artists while bringing lesser-known destinations to wider attention." The festival originally launched in 2024 to highlight the district's seasonal cosmos blooms.
It has since ballooned into a showcase for indigenous games, music, and local food. Social media campaigns pushed the event to 22.5 million people globally. Officials now hope to turn this seasonal surge into year-round tourism. The long-term goal is to leverage Champhai's history and nature to keep visitors coming back long after the flowers fade.
