Aizawl: Mari ZT Lalrithangi, a 35-year-old former teacher from Sangau, became the first Mizo to earn a spot on the FAO 100 Women Heroes in Agrifood Systems and Rural Development list. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) recognized her work during the World Food Forum held in Rome from October 12 to 16. She received the distinction on October 15, standing out among more than 600 candidates from 131 countries.

She beat the odds. Only two women from India made the final selection for this honour, which celebrates the International Year of Women Farmers 2026. Prior to this international recognition, she won the Best Farmer title for Lawngtlai district at the Mizoram Horti Fair 2026.

Lalrithangi, who holds a postgraduate degree in Sociology from IGNOU, pivoted to farming after repeated failures to secure government employment. She started her journey in 2024 by planting 1,000 strawberry saplings on a plot 5 km from her village. After seeing results, she expanded the operation to over 10,000 plants spanning two hectares.

The business grew fast. Her initial income of Rs 1.5 lakh in the first year jumped to over Rs 10 lakh by 2025. She also diversifies her inventory by processing fruit into strawberry wine and candy for local sale. Without formal agricultural training, she mastered her craft using YouTube tutorials and advice from fellow farmers. Balancing the workload required intense dedication. She frequently studied farming methods late at night or while caring for her three children.

Her family provided essential support. Her husband, a government primary school teacher in Sangau, and her parents-in-law assist with the farm, particularly on weekends. Reflecting on her success while in Rome, she said, "I am delighted to receive the honour and thank God, my family and the Mizoram Horticulture Department for their support."
