Aizawl: Lawngtlai officials are clamping down on unauthorized trade and refugee movement along the Myanmar border. Deputy Commissioner Donny Lalruatsanga confirmed the enforcement push on October 15 following a meeting with the Central Young Lai Association. The crackdown follows the seizure of 10 pickup trucks.
Volunteers from the Young Lai Association intercepted these vehicles Tuesday in the AOC Veng area of Lawngtlai. The trucks were coming from Aizawl. Authorities handed them over to the District Transport Office for further action.
The administration is now intensifying surveillance of all cross-border activity. This includes tracking vehicles heading into Myanmar from the Chin and Rakhine states. Officials are specifically monitoring for stolen cars and new vehicles moved with improper Indian registration documents.
Lalruatsanga voiced frustration regarding reports that some individuals are shaking down drivers at illegal checkpoints. He called these actions unacceptable. "Those involved would be identified and dealt with according to the law," he stated.
Nearly 30,000 people from Myanmar currently seek shelter throughout Mizoram. Many reside within the Lawngtlai district. The local administration is working with the Lai Autonomous District Council to ensure order. They demand total compliance with magistrate orders. Officials urged the public to assist enforcement agencies in stopping these unlawful operations.
