Aizawl: The Mizoram government is pushing to expand its Universal Health Care Scheme. Officials issued a notice on October 15 inviting private clinics to join at the same rates currently held by Synod Hospital. The move follows public claims of favoritism toward the church-run facility. Government leaders insist the offer stands for any facility that matches the capacity and technical standards of the Aizawl institution.
Health Minister Lalrinpuii defended the state's position. She claims the silver-grade status assigned to Synod Hospital stems from its 350-bed capacity, available doctors, and specialized equipment. Negotiations were held before the initial deal, forcing the hospital to cut some of its original service charges. The current agreement expires this month. Both parties are now hashing out new terms based on standard base rates. “The government is ready to empanel any non-empanelled hospital in Mizoram having facilities comparable to those of Synod Hospital at the rates agreed upon with the latter,” the notification stated.
Private providers aren't buying the logic. The Non-Government Hospital Association of Mizoram claims Synod Hospital deserves only a bronze grade, while suggesting their own members like Ebenezer Medical Center, Trinity Hospital, and LRM Hospital hit the silver threshold. The association argues the current rates granted to Synod Hospital sit 100 percent above base levels. They claim this ignores the grading system, which caps silver-grade bonuses at 30 percent. Aizawl Hospital, Ebenezer Medical Center, and Trinity Hospital remain open to joining the scheme if the government matches their preferred pricing.
