Aizawl: The Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) will stage a statewide protest on July 21. They call it a Black Day. The demonstration starts at noon to challenge the proposed Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026. MPCC treasurer Dr. Lalmalsawma Nghaka announced the action at an Aizawl press conference on Thursday.
Party officials claim the BJP-led Centre intends to stifle Christian organizations, NGOs, and churches that rely on overseas cash. Nghaka warned the move disproportionately targets the Christian community. He stated, "The proposed amendment will severely impact churches, NGOs and Christian organisations that rely on foreign contributions for their social, educational and charitable activities."
The Congress plans to fight until the government pulls the bill. Party data suggests the BJP has already cancelled FCRA licenses for over 20,000 organizations nationwide. Several Mizoram groups are among the casualties. Nghaka noted that churches already face hurdles securing these funds. The original 1976 law underwent updates in 1984, 2010, and 2020. This latest 2026 proposal adds more pressure.
In a separate political shift, the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) elected Zoram People's Movement leader Kali Kumar Tongchangya as chairman. The Fultuli constituency representative ran unopposed on July 16. Deputy Chairman Sundor Muni Chakma declared him the winner after the resignation of former chairman Lakkhan Chakma.
The CADC recently emerged from a year of Governor's Rule, which ran from July 7, 2025, to July 7, 2026. A new BJP-ZPM alliance currently controls 19 of the 20 council seats. Chief Executive Member Nirupam Chakma, who leads the coalition, praised Tongchangya as an experienced legislator. The lone Mizo National Front member holds the final seat in the council.
