Aizawl: The Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee slammed the Zoram People’s Movement government on Wednesday for cratering the state budget. Publicity Chairman PC Laltlansanga reported total outstanding debt has hit Rs 19,085.15 crore. This figure dwarfs the current annual budget of Rs 17,076.92 crore. The red ink continues to climb.

Laltlansanga broke down the math for local taxpayers. Every resident, from newborns to the elderly, carries a debt burden of roughly Rs 1.45 lakh. During the first seven months of this financial year, the government borrowed Rs 6,119.8 crore. This already eclipses the Rs 5,308 crore borrowed throughout the entire previous year. The shortfall now sits at Rs 2,008.23 crore over the budget.

The Congress leader did not hold back. "Among all the governments that have ruled Mizoram, the ZPM government is the worst at managing finances," Laltlansanga alleged. He also accused officials of funneling borrowed cash into restricted tenders and departmental contracts for cronies. The party is demanding a total halt to new loans and a complete overhaul of fiscal policy.

ZPM leadership stayed silent after the press conference. They stated they would issue a response only when necessary.
