Guwahati: Assam police suspended constable Anil Tai following a violent confrontation at a rented home in Mariani. Tai, a member of the Mariani police station traffic branch, allegedly stormed the Gandhi Nagar residence of Husnara Khatun on Monday. He slapped family members and struck them with a stick, including women and children present in the home. A video of the assault later hit social media, forcing authorities to act.
Jorhat police registered a formal case after the victim filed a complaint. Jorhat SSP Subhrajyoti Bora confirmed the constable was pulled from duty and sent to the Reserve Office to ensure a fair investigation. The dispute centers on a property owned by Imtiaz Hussain, which currently houses two tenant families. Tensions ignited Monday morning over a switch connected to a water pump. Tai entered the home later that day. Bora clarified the officer was on duty, but the attack did not involve his official capacity. "Although the constable was on duty, the alleged assault was not carried out using his authority as a police officer."
The situation remains volatile. Tai’s daughter, who lives in the building, filed a counter-complaint accusing Husnara of torture. Police registered a second FIR against Husnara based on these claims. Officers have made no arrests yet. Investigations into both cases continue.
