Aizawl: Mizoram launched the Jordan Centre in Sethawn, Kolasib district, on Tuesday to fight rising drug abuse. Social Welfare Minister Lalrinpuii and Mizoram Synod Moderator Rev John Raldosanga led the dedication ceremony. The state government signed a memorandum of understanding in March, handing operations to the Mizoram Synod for 15 years.
Lalrinpuii stressed the need for government and church cooperation. She shifted the focus toward demand reduction and rehab programs. "The high prevalence of drug addiction in Mizoram remained a serious concern," the minister noted. She also warned local pharmacy owners against illegal drug sales, threatening to pull licenses if they break the law.
The facility handles 70 to 80 people for de-addiction, plus 150 more for after-care and vocational training. Fees are set at Rs 3,000 per month, but the Mizoram Synod will cover costs for those who cannot pay. This is the third rescue home run by the Synod. Admissions started October 7, and the first residents arrive on October 20.
