Imphal: City Police launched a special crackdown in Imphal to clear crowded markets of drug users. The operation comes as part of the state's ongoing War on Drugs campaign. Officers acted after photos and videos of people using substances in public went viral online. Police caught 12 individuals during the sweep.
The force teamed up with the Social Welfare Department to handle the detainees. Each person received group counseling before transport. Officials moved them to three specific facilities for care. These include the Anouba Mangal Trust Centre at Khuman Lampak, the Newborn Alcohol and Substance Use Disorder Rehabilitation Centre at Awang Leikinthabi, and the New Dawn Rehabilitation Centre at Langol.
One person captured in the sweep had already gained notoriety from the online footage. Authorities claim this initiative aims to stop the public display of addiction. They warned that the crackdown will not stop here. A police spokesperson said, "similar drives will continue" to combat the regional drug menace. Officials also urged residents to stop using drugs and back the police efforts to clean up city streets.
