Lamphel protesters demand 1951 NRC cutoff and IDP resettlement

Imphal: Protesters gathered at Lamphel Super Market on Thursday to demand an updated National Register of Citizens for Manipur. They want 1951 set as the base year for the registry. The sit-in drew support from the All Manipur United Clubs Organisation, PLMPAM, AMAWOVA, the Committee on Human Rights, and the Manipur Students Federation.

Women at the event hoisted signs calling for the repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act of 1958. They also voiced opposition to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The crowd wants state and central officials to prioritize the resettlement of internally displaced persons in their original homes.

Phulindro Konsham, chairman of the Committee on Human Rights, warned against moving forward with the Census before fixing the NRC. He highlighted ongoing civilian attacks and potential human rights violations across the state. Konsham demanded accountability from the Manipur and Indian governments to protect property and lives. He insisted on a permanent fix to the violence, adding, "the committee would continue to pursue its demands through democratic means."
